What Should You Never Tell an AI?
Chatbots feel like friendly conversations — but they're software. The company behind the AI may store what you type. Some things should stay private, no matter who (or what) is asking.
- Never share your full name, home address, school name, or phone number with AI
- Never share passwords — not even with "helpful" AI assistants
- Treat an AI chatbot like a public notice board, not a private diary
- If a website asks for personal info before letting you use AI, ask a trusted adult first
- Your data is valuable — protect it like you'd protect your lunch money
Postcards, Not Diaries
Where does your chat go when you press send? It travels to computers owned by the AI company, and it can be stored there. Some companies even use conversations to help train future AI. So here's a picture to keep in your head: a diary is private — locked, just for you. A postcard travels through many hands, and anyone along the way might read it. Treat every AI chat like a postcard. Writing about your favourite dinosaur? Perfect postcard material. Your address, your secrets, something embarrassing about a friend? That belongs in the diary — which means: not in the chat. Quick test before typing: "would I be okay with a stranger reading this?" If not, don't send it.
